Development Log 1/6/19

Hi welcome back to another weekly update for Hero Soul!

For this week's update I want to talk about major changes to the rooms. Namely, they are a lot larger, about 1.5x larger in fact. For the level shown in the demo, the Koros Forest, it was brought to my attention that the rooms were a little cramped. While I did want to foster a feeling of claustrophobia, in the end it felt too restrictive. Especially when enemy projectiles and spells are thrown into the mix. Enemy projectiles filled too much of the screen and spells hit walls instead of enemies way too often.

The new enlarged rooms

You'll notice too that some of the UI as been resized to prevent it from covering too much of the screen as well. Overall, I believe the new room sizes fit the character's actual size better as well.  Before, the character would be almost the same height as the treeline, now the treeline is a bit more accurate. There will have to be a bit more testing involved here, since the new room sizes have been messing with pathfinding. In addition, before rooms were designed to fit perfectly within the camera's field. This is no longer possible since the rooms are bigger so the camera currently pans to follow the character. One thing I have been fighting with is the speed and acceleration the camera pans to follow the character and more tweaking will need to be done to ensure players don't feel disoriented.

New room size aside, much work on the campaign has also been done, though I don't want to get into that too much since I don't want to spoil too much. :)

That's it for this week! See you next week.
